Cleaning Tips To Help Prevent Coronavirus Spreading Further

Concerns around the globe about the spread of the novel coronavirus COVID-19 have sparked mass buy-ups by consumers of hand-sanitisers, face masks, disinfectants and other cleaning products. There has also been an increase in demand for commercial cleaners for locations from schools to shopping malls to retirement villages.

Recent research from the National Instutitutes of Health (that has not been peer-reviewed yet) suggests COVID-19 could survive up to 24 hours on cardboard and 2-3 days on surfaces such as plastic and stainless steel.

An earlier research paper from the Journal of Hospital Infection has analysed 22 studies and suggests disinfecting surfaces with 62–71% ethanol, 0.5% hydrogen peroxide or 0.1% sodium hypochlorite has been able to deactivate other coronaviruses. These chemicals can safely and effectively be applied with Ezi-action drum pumps.

Data is being gathered in many countries, but as it’s a new virus, experts are wary of providing definitive answers or instructions before they understand this coronavirus fully. When it comes to cleaning however, whether at home or at commercial premises, there are a couple of best practices to follow:

• Fully read instructions to understand if the chemicals you are using work on contact, or require a period of time on a surface.

• Don’t use wipes as this is known to spread germs from one surface to the next.

• Be sure to apply enough chemical to a surface to cover it completely and let it air-dry (if required).

• Don’t mix chemicals unless instructed as this may negate their benefits or make them dangerous.

• Carefully handle, clean or dispose of any protective equipment such as gloves or masks used while cleaning.

While more is being learnt about COVID-19 and possible treatments, early containment and prevention of further spread are crucial to stopping this outbreak.
